Twenty-five years after the first episode aired, fans of the anime One Piece were surprised by Netflix’s recent announcement!
Since it reached the Final Saga, the ongoing adventure created by Eiichiro Oda will get a remake named “The One Piece.” And it will retell the show’s first episodes, the East Blue Saga, with a modern look.
Despite fan concerns on social media, the current long-term One Piece anime won’t be interrupted due to the project, and both versions of the show will be released simultaneously.
Many anime from the late 80s through early 2000s have recently gotten reboots or sequels. Revisiting successful titles from the past gives older and younger anime and manga fans happy and nostalgic surprises.
One Piece Remake: The One Piece
Not long ago, Netflix released a short live-action adaptation of the same Eiichiro Oda manga. For eight weeks, the live-action One Piece ranked among the top 10 series in over ninety countries, and a second season is being produced.
During the annual anime and manga event, Jump Festa, it was announced that WIT Studio, responsible for memorable works such as Attack on Titan, is working on a new animated adaptation of One Piece, starting from the story’s beginning.
According to the production team, the new anime series, The One Piece, is a big project that will take a while until its conclusion. The current version of the show (the East Blue Saga adaptation) has 61 episodes.
With the remake for streaming, producers aim to give a different but still nostalgic view of the series, exploring new visual technology to reimagine Luffy’s adventures.
About One Piece
One Piece is originally a manga created by Eiichiro Oda that began serialization in 1997. The adaptation to TV came in 1999 and has been thriving since then. It has nearly 1100 episodes divided into eleven sagas, the latest from December 2023. Aside from TV episodes, the animated adaptation includes fifteen movies.
The action-adventure story centers on Monkey D. Luffy, one of the many pirates who dream of finding the legendary treasure that names the show “One Piece.”
As the story unfolds, we see Luffy use charisma to gather his crew and perform incredible attacks with his unusual rubber-like body as the group explores the world and confronts rivals along the way.
East Blue Saga
The East Blue Saga is the introductory saga of One Piece. It spans from episodes one to sixty-one in the anime and chapters one to one hundred. This saga is also the part of the story covered in Netflix’s live-action adaptation from August 2023.
The saga shows how Monkey D. Luffy, as a little boy, meets the infamous Red Hair Pirates, how the encounter inspires him, and his desire to become the next Pirate King.
Years later, Luffy sets sail for his adventures and recruits his crew’s first and iconic members: Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji — forming the Straw Hat Pirates.
